Pool Care for the Homeowner

One question I often get from weekly service customers is, “Should I be doing anything throughout the week in between your trips to keep the pool looking good?” I love getting this question. Not only is the answer a resounding yes, but if a few things aren’t cared for throughout the week, it makes the weekly visits less effective. Our job - and priority number one - is to keep our customers’ pools looking great. So let’s talk about some things that you as a homeowner can help with, in order for your pools to continue to sparkle.

First off - Why would you need to do anything? After all, you are paying a company for weekly service. Shouldn’t their weekly visit ensure you can sit back and not worry about a thing in between visits?
Yes, but there’s more to it than just that.

A healthy pool needs to have a good strong flow of water from the pool, to the pump, through the filter, and back into the pool in order for chemicals to be properly dispersed. The pipes that the pool water flows through need to be clear at all times to be effective. Anything blocking that flow can cause issues such as preventing your pump from running, and in turn, preventing your water from flowing. Ultimately, a pool that isn’t flowing properly will turn green or get murky in a hurry.

So let’s talk about what small things can be done throughout the week in order for your service to be effective.
These things include:
- Emptying your skimmer baskets
- Maintaining proper water level (halfway up the tile line)
- Emptying pump baskets when full
- Ensuring the skimmer doors (or weirs) aren’t stuck open or closed
- Backwashing your DE filter when needed. (After big storms, it’s good to check the filter pressure once 24 hours has passed)

When this small handful of things is maintained throughout the week, your pool service will have a much bigger impact moving forward, and will keep your pool consistently shining!
